What is counselling?
Counselling is a professional process where people will work with a trained counsellor or therapist to explore and address personal, emotional, psychological or relational issues.

Counselling provides a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space where people can express their thoughts, feelings and experiences while working towards personal growth, resolution of issues and improved wellbeing.

How long will I need to see you?

The duration of therapy varies for individuals. Some people find that a few sessions will be enough, whereas for other, longer-term work will be more appropriate.

We will explore together what feels right for you and work together to find the right number of sessions for you.

What will happen in the first session?

Our first session will give us a chance to get to know each other and see if we would like to work together.

I will usually ask questions to understand what is happening in your life to bring you to counselling. These may include: –

Looking at your history and current circumstances.

Things you have tried to help you feel better and support your mental health.

What would you like to achieve in therapy?

There will also be a chance for you to ask any questions that you may have in terms of my qualifications or the way that I will work to support you.

How do I know you are the right person?

Sometimes it can be difficult to know if you are making the right choice in choosing a therapist. In our session we can see how you feel. Generally, if you feel comfortable, heard and supported this could indicate that we could work well together.

What if I don’t want to talk about something?
Sometimes the things that bring us to therapy are incredibly challenging to talk about. It is not unusual to find it difficult to share our experiences. Sessions will focus on the issues that you want to bring. The sessions provide a space for you to tell your story, at your pace and in your own time. Initially this may be difficult, but as we get to know each other better and you feel more comfortable, this will become easier and feel more natural. I believe that it is important that we can work together to find a way that works for you.

Do you keep the things we talk about confidential?

The things that we talk about in sessions are private and confidential. Trust is an important aspect of the work that we do. Ensuring your confidentiality is just one of the factors that enables you to trust the process of therapy and allow yourself to be with the difficult and uncomfortable feelings and feel safe enough to be with your vulnerability. There are a few exceptions when I would not be able to ensure confidentiality which I will explore with you during our first session together.

What will I feel when I start therapy?

Starting therapy can be incredibly difficult. It takes courage to seek support. When you take those initial steps, you can experience a variety of emotions which may include feeling anxious, fearful, overwhelmed, scared or frustrated. Whatever you feel, it is okay. Together we can find a way to work with these feelings so that you can begin to make sense of your experience and navigate a way forward to reach your goals.
